From Your Regional Leadership

Dear passionate members of the South and Central America Region of ISCT,

It is with great pleasure that I introduce myself as the new Regional Vice-President and express how much of an honor it is to represent you at this leading, global society. I am a full professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil and have been involved in regenerative medicine research for the last 20 years. The South and Central American regions are quite unique regarding the use of cell and gene therapies for different diseases, which affect millions of people in our region and around the world. Our main objective is to bring together clinicians, scientists, technologists, regulatory agencies and industry partners to reduce morbidity and mortality in a variety of clinical scenarios. We will work in close association with other societies and governments to discuss the rules on the use of gene and cell therapies in South and Central American countries. In recent years, researchers have begun working closely with the industry, which is playing a significant role in the improvement of patient outcomes and the well-being of our communities. It’s truly amazing work and it is so gratifying to work in this field.

In line with ISCT´s mission of driving translation for cellular therapies to help patients worldwide, we also aim to increase communication between South and Central American countries, thus promoting a more collaborative and cohesive network. Furthermore, we plan to train a significant number of researchers and technologists, focusing on stem cell and gene biology, bioengineering, as well as good laboratory (GLP), good manufacturing (GMP) and good clinical procedures (GCP). We intend not only to develop an educational program to teach young researchers stem cell principles, but to also promote lectures for patient associations, disclosing potential therapies and limitations concerning regenerative medicine with the purpose of addressing the growing problem of medical tourism.

It is a privilege to serve as Vice-President of ISCT’s South and Central America regions and I am not alone. I have the dedicated support of an experienced and excellent regional executive team and together we are here to serve the local members of the Society.

Please feel free to contact us and let us know what we can do for you. Our main goal is to provide any support required to improve cell and gene therapies throughout South and Central American countries.

Looking forward to building strong partnerships with all of you.
